Instead, we call game stores, libraries, and convention spaces "home." The first part of 2009 is celebrating the empowerment that L2s now have to certify new judges into our family. But no family stays sane if the house gets too crowded. Thus, we are constantly looking for new places to grow the family. Untold times in the past I've offered advice to judges about how they can help stores start up sanctioned events so they have another place to practice their craft. The need to prod a store owner into becoming an organizer has officially ended. After all, we judges know that the best people to run events are the people actually trained to run events. There's a long history of judges also being organizers. At the end of last week, the DCI decided to write a new piece of history. Effective immediately, if a judge who was active as of January 1st, 2009, wants a place to hold FNM, they don't need to wait for that location to get up to speed. The judges themselves can bring organization wherever they go. You are now a Tournament Organizer. Yes, all level 1 or level 2 judges that were not previously Core or Advanced level organizers in the WPN are now Core. All level 3 judges are now Advanced level organizers. For more information about what the WPN levels, and the privileges that go along with them, go to: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/wpn/levels What this means is that if you know of a store that wants to offer FNM, you can be the FNM organizer while they host. Or if you have a library or event space where a group could get together for FNM, then you can run it there. As certified judges, we expect you have the skills it takes to make events happen, and if you run into a snag, you have 1700+ friends ready to help find solutions. The sanctioning window for the Conflux events closed last month, but the FNM window for February doesn't close until this Friday the 16th. If Joe Owner's Shop down the street has been struggling to run events, you now have the power to show them the benefits of the DCI training you put all that effort into. Or perhaps you just want to run an event on the Saturdays before PTQs as a practice round for players in the area-what you organize is now up to you. We are keeping this experiment going through the first half of 2009 (at least). That means that when Alara Reborn Prereleases and Launch Parties are available, you will be able to sign up for those as well. And yes, it is fine for you to partner with your local store to share the space they offer for concurrent Prereleases (just make sure you don't mix up what's what). Who: You.
